Q. Gorau Dawn Deall Unanswered

In 1965 I was given a shield shaped brooch with the above words on it by my grandfather, who was from Bangor. He said it had belonged to a friend who had attended the University & he gave it to me because I was about to study there. Did students routinely have them or did they have to achieve in some way to receive them? I recently showed it to my Siawns am Sgwrs group, but wasn\\\'t able to tell them much, other than that it was linked to the University. I understand that Gorau dawn deall was the Uni motto.

About Bangor University

Bangor University is one of the most renowned universities in the United Kingdom. But if we look at the history of the university, we will find that it was not just in a day or a month that took Bangor University to a sky height. Many people are engaged in the success of the university. Usually the Bangor University was established in the late 19th century and it slowly got recognition as the years passed by. Bangor University was founded in 1884, with the number of students standing at only 58. This famous institution named Bangor University was formed on October 18, 1884. The staff members are another important part of a university and interestingly, the number of staff members at the time of foundation of Bangor University was only 10, though this number has risen to a three-figure mark during the years.

The main reason for the foundation of Bangor University was to create a provision for higher education in the Wales in the 19th century. The university has an interesting history, which states that the local people made voluntary contributions from their weekly wages to raise funds to set up a college of university rank in Bangor. The people who contributed funds to Bangor University included farmers and quarry men. It was hard for the farmers and quarry men at that time to donate or contribute funds, yet they managed to do so from their weekly wages.

In the initial days of Bangor University, the university students would get their degree from the University of London. This continued till 1893, that is, nine years after foundation. In 1893, after the Bangor University became an original constitute college of the University of Wales, students of Bangor University started getting the degrees and certificates in the name of their own college. 1911 was a very special year for the Bangor University, as in this year, the major building of the institution was constructed along with the arts and social science department, which had a part allotted for the construction of the library too. However, the science department was shifted from Penrhyn Arms in the new building in 1926.

Bangor University is located in the city of Bangor, with whom it shares its name in the county of Gwynedd, North Wales. The university is gaining popularity because of its location between Snowdonia and Anglesey island. The main attraction for Bangor University is its various departments that offer a range of subjects, with each student having the freedom to choose his or her subject, depending on their wishes. Bangor University offers both post-graduation and under-graduation degrees to its students. Bangor University offers a range of scholarships for its intelligent and extraordinary students on the occasion of completion of 125 years in 2009. On its 125th anniversary, Bangor University introduced a five-year program for the students of post graduation. Its Research and Innovation Office focuses on supporting its research and innovation agenda.
